Unfinished
Teaching 7th graders how to make art has definitely improved my skills -- I've been having to break down in my own mind what makes "good" art, and have had to practice the same skills that I expect my students to master. However, completing artwork has been tough, so here are two new additions (that I am very proud of) to my portfolio that, however, are as of yet very unfinished.
Also, if you want to see what my students are doing, look up Lake Village, AR on artsonia.com and leave us comments on our projects! The kids love to see the visit-counter go up, and the more popular we are the more chances we have of winning an artsonia-sponsored cash prize for better supplies!
Enjoy,
Jacob

Oil Painting for Beginners
Hey everyone,
In my little down time now that I am teaching, I've had the opportunity to sing up for an "Oil Painting" for beginners class in Greenville, MS. So far, it's been an awesome time. Here are the first few products (again, remember BEGINNER is the key word here)...
My first one (keeping it monochromatic was the assignment):

My second one (same assignment here):

My third (a gesture painting of the same object):

My fourth (monochromatic gesture drawing with localized color):

And more to come in the future! I've also been recently inspired by a friend to make larger-scale watercolor landscapes, so those will be posted on here as well (hopefully soon).

Fish and HELP!
Hey everyone,
Here is the first thing I've had the opportunity to sketch out in a while... just haven't been very productive in the art department I guess. BUT, I'm getting my own batch of art students on August 19th, and I think I should show them some of my work by way of introducing myself. SO, I was wondering if I could enlist your help in choosing (through the comments or whatever) a couple pieces from this blog that you think middle-schoolers would like knowing their teacher made.
Thanks y'all,
Jacob

Odds and Ends
Below are a bunch of doodles and sketches I made in the past month or so. Sorry for not updating recently... exams and all.
Tatooed Cone-Man in a Bog (interest in this as a T-shirt? I was thinking of making some, but I want to know if people would be up for buying them... comment below if yes):

Robot and Roboto:

I have no clue what the hell this guy is:

Palestine Awareness Week Poster
Deatils for Palestine Awareness Week Poster
These are some details that later went in to composing the various parts of a Palestine Awareness Week poster I made for a group called Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at Haverford. Musa Hamideh is their boss, and he's a pretty cool goy. I will post the final product as soon as Musa sends it to me.

A Few Watercolors
These are three watercolors I made in the course of the past year or so.
This first one is a collaboration with Hope Kaye - it was intended to be the design for a future mural, but those plans were later aborted:

These next two watercolors are unusual for my kind of thing - they were the creative portion of a paper I wrote for a class called "Studies of Environments and Place" taught by Prof. Stephen Finley. Anyways, these are my intentionally abstract and memory-based depictions of Deep Water Landing on Louds Island, ME and the Tomb of St. Francis of Assisi in Assisi, Italy.

Signs
These are some signs and symbols I was commissioned to do over the past couple years:
The following series was done to guide people through the Print Lottery process of Philagrafika's Summer Solstice 2008 event:
1. Sign in and receive your lottery slip:

2. Look at the artwork:

3. Write down your top choices:

4. Drop your filled-out lottery slip in the box:

5. Receive your artwork:

These are icons I drew for an exhibit of Bryn Mawr's Special Collections' Book of Hours Exhibit:
